Why a budget helps (even if you hate the idea)
A budget is a plan, not a punishment.
Many people avoid budgeting because it sounds like saying no to everything. A good budget does the opposite: it decides in advance what matters to you, so you can spend on those things without guilt.
What a budget does
- Shows where your money actually goes
- Makes sure bills are covered before the fun money
- Gives every dollar a job, including saving
- Turns money arguments into a shared plan
What it doesn't have to be
- A spreadsheet with 60 categories
- Tracking every cent forever
- Giving up everything you enjoy
Start small
Your first budget can be one page with ten lines. You can always add detail later.
