Needs, wants and savings: sorting your spending
Three buckets that make any budget easier.
Sorting spending into needs, wants and savings is the simplest way to see if your money matches your priorities.
Needs
Things you must pay to live and work: housing, utilities, basic groceries, transportation, insurance, minimum debt payments, childcare.
Wants
Things that make life better but could be cut in a pinch: eating out, streaming, hobbies, upgrades, travel.
Savings and extra debt payments
Money for your future: emergency fund, retirement, goals, and paying debts faster than the minimum.
Gray areas
Groceries can be a need, but a premium version is partly a want. Split it if it helps, and don't overthink it.
