When your budget falls apart

A blown budget is information, not failure.

4 min read

Almost everyone overspends in the first few months. That's how a budget learns what real life costs.

What to do

  1. Find the category that broke and why
  2. Decide if the budget was unrealistic or the month was unusual
  3. Adjust the number, or plan for it next time
  4. Start the next month fresh

If money is truly short

Cover housing, utilities, food and transportation first, and contact creditors early. A nonprofit credit counseling agency can help you make a plan for free or at low cost.
